OLEXANDR FILBERT (1911-1996) was born in Dubivtsi, Volgograd Region. In 1931, he entered the Kyiv Art Institute, where he studied under Professor Krychevsky. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1939, he moved to Voloshilovgrad (now Luhansk), the capital of the newly created Donbass region, where he founded a regional school of realism painting. His paintings have been shown at 50 international and domestic exhibitions. A memorial museum to the artist was opened in Luhansk in the late 1990s.
